Ukraine develops VR simulator to train soldiers to shoot down FPV drones with shotguns

Ukrainian company Atmaraksi has developed a virtual reality training simulator designed to train soldiers on how to shoot down FPV drones with shotguns. The VR system, created specifically to provide modern training tools for the military, can simulate combat-like conditions, helping personnel practice drone interception in a safe yet realistic environment.

The simulator allows troops to build muscle memory, adopt proper stances, and maintain control under pressure—all essential skills for effectively neutralizing drones.

Developers stated that the system also boosts soldiers’ confidence by reinforcing a “victory mindset,” allowing them to repeatedly succeed in reacting to drone threats embedded in their subconscious.

Combat veterans who have faced FPV drones on the battlefield contributed to the simulator’s scenario design. Virtual drones attack from different directions and at varying speeds, closely mimicking the unpredictability of real-life encounters.

The simulator features adjustable settings, allowing instructors to customize difficulty levels, modify aiming cues, and control elements such as preemptive fire options.

Reports indicate that after completing thousands of simulated scenarios, users respond to incoming threats almost instantly, significantly improving battlefield performance. This VR tool is suitable for both recruits and experienced soldiers seeking to enhance their counter-drone capabilities.

This is one of several VR-based systems developed by Ukraine to address the increasing use of FPV drones in the war. In a separate initiative, volunteers recently donated the Chaika-M simulator to the 5th Border Detachment to support similar training efforts.
