Recently, groups of three Ukrainian drones approached Russian positions under the cover of night, autonomously determining the timing of their strikes. Swarm drone technology has opened a new phase of drone warfare, allowing the simultaneous use of dozens or even thousands of drones. According to senior Ukrainian officers and representatives of a software company, Ukraine has already been deploying swarm drone attacks on the battlefield for much of the past year.

Analysts emphasize that these operations—until now not fully disclosed—serve as examples of Ukraine’s routine use of swarm drone technology in the war, underscoring the country’s leadership in this field. At the same time, the integration of artificial intelligence on the battlefield raises ethical concerns, as machines could potentially make life-or-death decisions about both soldiers and civilians.

(Ukrainian swarm drones equipped with artificial intelligence technology)

According to the software company’s representative, testing with swarms of 100 drones will soon be conducted. About a year ago, the Ukrainian military first used swarm technology for mine-laying. Since then, it has been applied to strike Russian military equipment and infrastructure. A Ukrainian Armed Forces officer, speaking anonymously, said his unit has employed the system more than a hundred times, and other units have also received drones equipped with the software.
Ukraine typically deploys swarms in groups of three drones, though reports suggest formations of up to eight have been used. Company spokesperson Kupriyenko stated that the software has successfully passed formation tests with as many as 25 drones. According to senior Ukrainian officers, standard operations involve one reconnaissance drone and two attack drones armed with small bombs striking Russian positions. Operators designate the search area, and once targets are identified, they issue the attack command. The reconnaissance drone plots the route for the attack drones, while the attack drones autonomously decide when and in what sequence to release their payloads.

In a quiet corner of Indiana, a tech company has demonstrated the future of drone defense. Epirus successfully used its Leonidas directed energy weapon system to disable a swarm of 49 drones with a single invisible high-power microwave strike. This was not a missile or gun-based takedown but an electronic strike that simultaneously neutralized multiple drones. This technological leap could redefine current drone engagement rules.

For years, drone swarms have been the nightmare of military strategists. A single drone may be just a nuisance, but dozens or hundreds of coordinated drones can create a strategic disaster. They can overwhelm traditional air defense systems, which are designed to track large, fast-moving targets like jets or missiles, not small intelligent drone swarms.

Using expensive missiles to take them down is often ineffective, while drones’ small size and mobility make them hard to lock onto. This is why Epirus sought a better solution: a method that can immediately neutralize an entire swarm.
Leonidas is a high-power microwave (HPM) weapon that does not fire projectiles but generates a powerful, directional, and tunable microwave energy beam. When this energy strikes a drone, it overloads the drone’s sensitive internal electronics, effectively disrupting its flight control. The drone system then crashes from the sky.

Leonidas is a “software-defined” weapon. It uses a sophisticated miniature antenna, known as a phased array, to shape the energy beam with high speed and precision. It can form multiple beams simultaneously to engage several drone targets, or create a wide “wall” of energy to disperse an entire swarm at once. In the latest demonstration at the Indiana test range, the system successfully detected and disabled a swarm, proving its capability in real-world conditions.

Older HPM weapons functioned like electronic shotguns, with energy bursts potentially affecting friendly electronics or personnel. Leonidas is revolutionary because of its precision: the software-defined phased array acts like an electronic sniper rifle. It can create highly precise energy beams tailored to specific targets with surgical accuracy.

This allows it to disable hostile drones without interfering with nearby friendly aircraft. Specific waveforms can even be programmed to target certain types of drone electronics while leaving others untouched. It is a smarter, safer, and more effective use of microwave energy.

This capability changes the rules for drone threats, providing protection for military bases, naval vessels, and even civilian airports and stadiums against drone swarm attacks.

Taiwan has made a bold and unprecedented move by partnering with cutting-edge U.S. defense company Kratos to develop advanced jet-powered Kamikaze suicide drones. This collaboration goes beyond a simple arms deal, providing Taiwan with a powerful new asymmetric weapon while highlighting increasingly close ties between the U.S. defense industry and Taipei.

In recent years, battlefields in regions like Ukraine have been dominated by propeller-driven loitering munitions or suicide drones. They are cheap, effective, and have reshaped modern warfare. However, their main drawback is speed. Kratos, known for high-performance jet drones such as Mako and Valkyrie, produces drones capable of near-fighter jet speed and agility. Building a Kamikaze drone on such an airframe results in a deadly weapon that is difficult to intercept and can strike targets hundreds of kilometers away in a very short time.

This represents the difference between throwing stones and sniping bullets. It is a major leap in capability, designed to provide Taiwan with a reliable “first strike” or rapid-response weapon capable of hitting high-value targets or airfields at overwhelming speed. With the ability to produce these advanced drones alongside trusted U.S. partners, Taiwan is establishing a formidable deterrent. A large number of low-cost, high-speed, jet-powered Kamikaze drones could inflict serious damage on any invading forces.

During the 2025 Drone Days event held from August 27–29 at Oldenburg-Gatten Airport in Germany, Rheinmetall showcased Primoco drones equipped with new munitions, along with defensive drone interceptors and air-to-air missiles. The platform used is the Primoco One 150 reconnaissance drone, manufactured by Czech company Primoco.

The company stated that the One 150 has a range of approximately 1,800 km and can stay airborne for six to eight hours with a 30 km payload. Rheinmetall chose the Czech drone because catapults exert high pressure on air-to-air missiles, whereas the Primoco takes off and lands like a conventional aircraft. The configuration displayed at the exhibition included a multifunction electro-optical pod in the nose and four types of weapons—air-to-air missiles and three interceptor munitions.

The right wing carried a model of Rheinmetall-developed air-to-air missiles. The company stated that the missile has a flight time of five minutes and a speed of 600 km/h. It is primarily intended for drone self-defense against other UAVs and helicopters. The missile has a 4 km effective range and a TRL 3 technology readiness level, meaning the concept has been experimentally validated. Rheinmetall indicated that flight tests will commence soon.

Three Hero R-20 interceptor munitions, manufactured by German startup Bär Technology, are mounted on the Primoco’s left wing. Rheinmetall explained that the displayed version operates fully autonomously with its own Seeker Head. Future variants with laser guidance are planned to reduce costs. The Hero R-20 is based on a quadcopter design, with approximately 20 minutes endurance and a range of 5 km. Its 500 g warhead is still in development. The company stated that the munitions will soon reach TRL 8, meaning the technology is complete, qualified, and ready for mass production.

According to an official news release from WB Group, to meet growing demand, Polish Flyeye reconnaissance drone manufacturer has now established production operations in Ukraine. Full-scale drone manufacturing has begun in one of the Ukrainian facilities. The first batch of Polish reconnaissance drones entered service with the Ukrainian military back in 2015 and have been actively deployed in the Donbas conflict. During Russia’s full-scale invasion, these drones saw even broader operational use.

During training exercises of the Belarusian Armed Forces’ Communications Troops, an FPV drone equipped with a fiber-optic control system entered service with the Belarusian military. Exercise photos were released by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus. The drone demonstration took place during operational and special training of the Communications Troops in preparation for the “West 2025” Russia-Belarus joint exercises. The Defense Minister and Chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces observed the exercises at one of the training sites.

Within the framework of military cooperation with the Russian Federation, the Belarusian military is actively adopting and adapting existing military tactics and operational experience to meet its own needs. In early March 2025, reports indicated that Belarus planned to send military and security officials to Russia for field visits to learn how to operate drones. President Lukashenko also instructed agency heads to become familiar with Russian drone usage and methods to ensure control over these processes in Belarus.

In May 2025, Belarus sent military instructors to Russia to study “training programs based on modern armed conflict experience.” By June 2025, the Chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces announced the formation of a dedicated drone unit.

(Russian “Supercam” drone in service with Belarusian military. Source: Ministry of Defense of Belarus)

To support this effort, Belarus is increasing the supply of military materials to Russia, particularly electronics and components for Russian cruise missiles and drones. Both sides are also discussing establishing a specialized “drone factory” in Belarus, capable of producing up to 100,000 drones per month for the Russian military.

Reportedly, production will focus on technologies already in use by Russia, allowing fully localized manufacturing.
